As we all know, the window to the world in a digital signage system is the display. Although video projection can be a great solution in certain applications, flat panel displays rule the roost. The issue at hand revolves around the type of flat panel to integrate; plasma or LCD? At CES we saw the newest developments in both with plasma growing to 150 inches and some sizes at less than an inch in thickness. We also see longer life plasmas at over 100K hours with as much as a 30% savings in power consumption. On the LCD front we also have thinner profiles, thinner bezels, 120Hz and 240Hz panels, LED backlights and more sizes up to 108 inches with power savings to boot. With these advances in both camps we still have issues of plasma burn in and LCD image retention especially in 24/7/365 applications. How do you view the “war” of the flat panel types as we enter the “new” age of digital signage?
